You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.
Through this trip, I understand this phrase just a little more. I’ve been on a mission trip before and I understand that even though we think we go overseas to make a difference, we always learn and get so much more from the people there. This CIP trip was no different.
We spent 10 days with the kids in the orphanage there. Over the 10 days, we tried to break the ice, to have fun with the kids and to love and encourage them. Simple things like giving them a high five, a hug, would cause their faces to light up with joy. Through all this, we built relationships with them.
What touched me the most was that over the last few days, as we thought of what gifts to give them, they thought of us as well. They only had so much, and yet they gave us their all. Some gave us their belongings, their favourite soft toys that they hug to sleep. Others went to buy gifts for us with what little money they had. Because they love us, they wanted to give good gifts, and even bought gift boxes to place these gifts in. They gave things that meant something to them, because we mattered to them. These kids had so little, but yet, they knew how to give and love extravagantly.
Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
